Cape Disappointment Bike Trip
August 20-22, 2004

START POINT: Linton, Oregon

HOW: Historic Lewis + Clark Railway from Linton to Astoria, bike from Astoria to Linton via the 4 mile Astria bridge across the river to Washington.

RIDERS: Jeff Bernards, MJ, Patrick Bardell, Kiran Limaye, me

Jan, the conductor, was most helpful. He shared with us facts about the Columbia River and the towns through which we passed. Swing bridges were swung by volunteers and at one point the train went down main street in Rainier. Throughout the trip, townsfolk waved as we passed, making an effort to come out of restaurants, hotel rooms and houses to do so. The train surely beat riding bikes to the coast.

The bridge from Astoria to Washingon is four miles of pure sketchiness. Log trucks, RVs and pick-ups with boats abound.

Every night in the Cape Disappointment camp ground, the staff shows a historic slide show outdoors. People sit on logs. Kiran and I played slide-show drinking games. A good time was had by all. After the slide shows, we made shadow puppets on the screen.

We swam for a half hour in the most freezing cold water I've ever been in. It was totally invigorrating.
